DNS changes don’t take effect immediately. Here’s what to expect.

What is Propagation?

DNS propagation is the time it takes for DNS changes to spread across the internet.

Typical Timing

  • Fast: 15 minutes to 4 hours
  • Average: 4-24 hours
  • Maximum: Up to 48 hours

Why It Takes Time

DNS records are cached by:
  • Your ISP
  • DNS servers worldwide
  • Browsers
  • Operating systems
Each cache has its own refresh timing.

Checking Propagation

Use online tools:
  1. Go to dnschecker.org
  2. Enter your domain
  3. Check propagation status globally

What to Do

While waiting:
  • Don’t make additional changes
  • Check status periodically
  • Be patient
  • Contact support if over 48 hours

Tips

  • Plan domain changes in advance
  • Lower TTL before changes (if possible)
  • Verify records are correct
  • Wait before troubleshooting
